After three days, Atlantic City casinos reopened on Saturday. The New Jersey budget crisis was solved and Governor Jon Corzine signed an order to end the state government shutdown, giving casinos permission to open at 7 a.m. The venues were soon crowded with gamblers.
Governor Corzine signed the order after he reached an agreement with state lawmakers to approve a nearly $31 billion budget. Under this agreement, the state sales tax will increase from 6 percent to 7 percent.
During the closure, the 12 casinos in the city lost $20 million a day. Besides, New Jersey’s parks, beaches and historic areas as well as the lottery system and road construction were shut.
